What is SharePoint?

SharePoint site is a website that provides a central storage and collaboration space for documents, information, and ideas. SharePoint site is a tool for collaboration, just like a telephone is a tool for communication, or a meeting is a tool for decision making. A SharePoint site helps groups of people (whether work teams or social groups) share information and work together. For example, a SharePoint site can help you:

* Coordinate projects, calendars, and schedules.
* Discuss ideas and review documents or proposals.
* Share information and keep in touch with other people.

SharePoint sites are dynamic and interactive -- members of the site can contribute their own ideas and content as well as comment on or contribute to other people's.

SharePoint is very advanced tool created by Microsoft. SharePoint is now available On Premise as well as on Cloud.

For some time now I was experimenting with the SharePoint Blog template. Being curious I continued to research, found that there are no web part connections. But when editing the web part current view, I've discovered a beautiful thing!

Now there is besides [Today] and [Me] that you can use for filter value, its [ID]. Perfect for making display forms and related contents. So now in SharePoint you can filter by ID also.

Though there are several products available in the market that are used for collaboration, but SharePoint is much in the competition due to its collaboration with MS Office products.

Though SharePoint follows one-size-fits-all and basic features are available free but its Enterprise version is very costly. Hence below list of competitor products can be considered as low-cost alternatives to SharePoint:
  1. IBM WebSphere
  2. Oracle Collaboration Services
  3. EMC Documentum
  4. Confluence
  5. Google Drive
